Workshop at noon – Sailors, Sirens & Kings: Traditions & Change in Ladino Song
Ladino is an endangered language with only 100,000 speakers left in Israel, Turkey, Greece and a few hundred in the US. This interactive lecture/demonstration introduces centuries old Ladino song types, history and language of Jewish communities expelled from Spain in 1492 that settled across the Ottoman Empire. Members of the award-winning Guy Mendilow Ensemble will also explore broader performance issues and challenges faced by musicians working with traditional repertoire.
Concert @ 7:30 p.m. – Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom
Embark on a musical trek to kingdoms long forgotten and bustling towns now vanished. Follow the stories of vagabond queens and lovers lost at sea, set to spellbinding arrangements of old Sephardi songs with lush soulful harmonies evoking Flamenco’s gutsiness and the longings of Fado. Journey through the Balkans to the Mid-East beginning in Sarajevo and winding through Salonica to Jerusalem in a sonic adventure brought to life by world-class musicians from Israel, Palestine, Argentina, Japan, UK and USA.
These events are presented by WSU Performing Arts as part of the 3rd Annual Humanitas Festival. For more information and a full schedule visit PerformingArts.wsu.edu/Humanitas.
