As the winter weather quickly approaches the struggle for heat becomes real. Portable space heaters will be popping up in offices and workspaces on every campus. WSU Fire and Safety Compliance wants to make sure you are staying warm safely. These are some things to keep in mind when choosing and operating your space heater:
- Space heaters need to be listed and labeled (no making your own).
- The units must be plugged into an approved receptacle (do not plug into surge protectors).
- Do not plug into an extension cord (tell your neighbor to use their own receptacle).
- Do not operate a space heater within 3 feet of any combustible materials (paper, wood, plastics, clothing, flammable liquids, furniture).
Types of approved heaters
- Water/antifreeze-filled
- Panel
- Ceramic element (recommended) — An electric heater with a fan having a ceramic heating element that distributes heat by forced air convection. This heater is usually shaped like a small cube, about seven or eight inches on each side.
- Tip over protection
- Overheating protection
Prohibited heaters in university buildings
- Electric radiant — An electric heater with electric elements that glow bright red or orange. This heater distributes energy as high radiant heat and uses 1,500 watts or more of electricity.
- Fuel-burning — A heater that burns fossil fuels or alcohol.
