Physics & Astronomy Colloquium: 60-plus years of shock physics

Physics & Astronomy at WSU celebrates 100 Years of Education, Discovery, and Innovation with Distinguished Colloquium speaker Yogendra Gupta, Regents professor of physics, Creighton distinguished professor, and director of the Institute for Shock Physics (ISP). Dr. Gupta will present “Sixty-plus Years of Shock Wave Research and Graduate Education at Washington State University” on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 4:10 p.m. in Webster Hall, room 17, WSU Pullman.

ISP is a DoE/NNSA “Center of Excellence” and multi-disciplinary research organization focused largely on understanding materials at extreme conditions. Dr. Gupta will present an historical overview of the significant scientific work and achievements of shock physics faculty, staff, and graduate students, including the contributions of George Duvall (WSU 1964-88) whose seminal work in dynamic compression science propelled the University to world prominence in the field. He will also talk about his own work, innovations, and discoveries in shock wave and high pressure research and will indicate a path for the future.

Physics & Astronomy anniversary events planned throughout AY 2019-20 feature prominent speakers on a wide range of topics in physics and astronomy presented in way that physicists and non-physicists can understand.
