Physics and Astronomy Colloquium – Dr. Guy Worthey – Dec. 8

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is proud to present  a colloquium featuring Dr. Guy Worthey, Department of Physics and Astronomy, WSU. Dr. Worthey will present his talk, “The Rules of Stellar Populations: And Some Science Stories”, Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 4:10 pm in Webster B17.

Meet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10pm in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.

Abstract: A stellar population is an idealized batch of stars, all born at the same time and with the same chemical mixture, but covering the range of stellar masses. This talk will focus on the basic rules that stellar populations follow, such as getting cooler when you add heavy elements to the composition, and rules that stellar populations don’t follow, such as brushing their teeth before they go to bed.
With the rules understood, we’ll go on to explore a few selected insights into galaxy evolution, a historical yarn or two, and a new age-dating technique with great promise.
