The WSU Libraries will start migrating access to our paid subscriptions via the single sign-on solution OpenAthens beginning Dec. 19. This process will continue throughout the Spring 2023 semester.
- What is OpenAthens?
OpenAthens is a single sign-on authentication and access system that works with Okta to connect users to WSU Libraries online resources. Rather than making users sign in twice, they will be taken directly to their online resource when already authenticated through Okta.Note: Not all vendors can use OpenAthens Federated Access to authenticate users. Some vendor platforms will still need to be proxied. Once we move completely to OpenAthens, these vendors will be proxied through OpenAthens.
- What changes will I notice starting Dec. 19?
Hopefully, not many! Most users won’t notice any, and some may notice having to login less to access library resources. - Will I need to update my Canvas course links for Spring Semester 2023?
Unfortunately, some links to Library resources will need to be updated, as not all our publishers allow for simultaneous proxy and OpenAthens access. If your Canvas course links directly to publisher websites and not to a WSU Libraries Search It record, those links should be checked and updated if necessary. This should be a rare occurrence for Spring 2023 resources. - Where can I get more information?
The WSU Libraries has created an OpenAthens web page with more details. Have a question? Contact us.
