The Distinguished Faculty Address featuring Psychology Professor Maureen Schmitter‑Edgecombe has been moved to Tuesday, April 9, at 2:30 p.m. (It was formerly slated for Wednesday, March 27.) The event will take place at the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center.
The address, “Aging gracefully: Maximizing brain health and independence,” will discuss research related to healthy brain‑aging behaviors. It will also address technologies that can support activities of daily living and provide real‑time intervention for Alzheimer’s disease patients.
Reservations are recommended. Reserve your seat by Wednesday, April 3. If you had already made a reservation for the previously scheduled date, please do so again for the April 9 event.
One in ten Americans over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. By 2025, the prevalence of the disease is expected to rise by at least 14 percent in every state, according to Alzheimers.net.
Schmitter‑Edgecombe’s address will examine ways to prevent dementia by optimizing health and wellness as people age. She will also discuss ways to assist those who already have Alzheimer’s disease through preventative interventions and smart and assistive technologies.
Schmitter‑Edgecombe is recognized worldwide for her scholarship in the field of clinical neuropsychology. Her work aims to improve the health of aging or cognitively impaired individuals, as well as to improve delivery of health care services to those populations.
She has developed interventions that support patients’ functional independence and improve their quality of life. She teams with scholars across disciplines to develop smart technologies for health care.
The annual Distinguished Faculty Address honors a faculty member who has risen to the front ranks of his or her discipline through achievements in research, scholarship, and teaching. It is part of Showcase, Washington State University’s annual celebration of academic excellence.
