Please join us as Leo Fifield will present: “Research on the State of Electrical Cable Materials in Nuclear Power Plants” in ETRL 101 at 12:10 on Friday, Sept. 18.
Dr. Fifield works as the Manager for the Nuclear Cable Aging Program and is a Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory.
Abstract: Nuclear power is an important energy source, used to generate nearly 20% of U.S. electricity. As the need for energy continues, existing nuclear power plants age, and construction of new plants proceeds slowly, there is an increasing motivation to understand opportunities for continued operation of existing plants beyond their current license periods. A major concern for extended operation of nuclear power plants relates to the natural aging and degradation of materials used in plant construction including those in reactor pressure vessels, concreate enclosures, and electrical cable systems. This presentation will describe ongoing research led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy to understand, measure, and predict electrical cable material aging in existing U.S. nuclear power plants.
