Please join us in the MASC, off the central atrium in Pullman’s Terrell Library, on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 3-4:30 p.m., for an opening celebration for our new exhibit. The exhibit is open for viewing during the MASC’s regular hours, M-F 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and will remain up through the final full week of April.
As the patriotic fervor from World War I began to subside, students at Washington State College found themselves uninspired by the songs associated with their school. Two senior students, Zella Melcher of Spokane and Phyllis Sayles of Lapwai, took on the task of writing new music to energize the student body. They debuted their creation to great acclaim on February 20, and one century later their Fight Song still inspires WSU students; it has gained a place in popular culture and been used as wake-up music for space shuttle astronauts. This exhibit, Win the Day for Crimson and Gray: Celebrating a Century of the Fight Song, looks at the significance of early music on campus, some of the songs that celebrate our Cougar heritage, and shares the lives of the two young women whose music thrives 100 years later.
