Learn to dress for success at AMDT career event

Helping their fellow Cougs dress to nail the job, students and faculty in the Apparel, Marketing, Design and Textiles Student Organization host a feedback and photo session, “Styling Your Professional Dress For Success,” 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, in the WSU CUB Junior Ballroom.

The AMDT Student Organization and WSU’s Academic Success & Career Center partnered for the mentoring event. WSU faculty and staff are also welcomed.

For students seeking a job, appearance matters, says Carol Salusso, an associate professor in Apparel, Marketing, Design and Textiles. When the WSU Career Center sought dress resources for students, Salusso and AMDT student Quinn Sullivan developed the Dress to Impress webpage (https://amdt.wsu.edu/dress-to-impress/).

“We show students how to critique their visual credibility,” Salusso said. “When you look at yourself, where does your eye go? It should go to your face and stay on your face to enhance your ability to get that job. If you drag the eye  away from your face, you’ve crippled your chances for success.”

“Styling Your Dress for Success” participants explore their own professional dress sense, learning how to improve their appearance for a business setting. At the event, they’ll receive a professional photo session, including a full-body photo, allowing them to can gauge their appearance the way a job interviewer might. A panel of AMDT students and faculty will share feedback on participants’ dress and non-verbal performance.

To really explore their visual credibility, participants should come wearing professional attire, if possible bringing several options. Photos will be emailed to participants for their LinkedIn and online portfolios.
