The challenge of diversifying scholarly populations in academia, particularly in STEM fields, is often blamed on “the leaky pipeline,” the belief that despite interest and ability, women and people of color tend not to pursue academic careers in research at the rate that white men do. The reliance on this idea puts the onus on individuals instead of on the codified systems and practices of academic disciplines that have created obstacles to both access and imagination for socially minoritized groups. Lisa Guerrero, Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusive Excellence — WSU Pullman, will present a discussion on why we need to think beyond the pipeline to more impactfully work toward diversifying our disciplines and the academic profession.
