Shawn Xu, PhD — Bernard W. Agranoff Collegiate Professor of the Life Sciences and Professor, Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the Life Sciences Institute, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor — will be visiting WSU Spokane. His seminar entitled, “How Do We Sense the World? Lessons from the Worm” will be in person in the Spokane Academic Center room 20 and through Zoom on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 12–1 p.m.
Dr. Xu joined the University of Michigan in 2005. Prior to joining U-M, Dr. Xu completed his post-doctoral training at the California Institute of Technology.
Dr. Shawn Xu’s lab studies sensory biology, including mechanosensation, thermosensation, chemosensation, photosensation and nociception. Their focus is on:
- Sensory transduction: Identifying novel sensory receptors and channels that sense temperature, touch, chemicals and light, and investigating how they regulate sensory signaling and behavior;
- Sensory processing: Identifying neural circuits and synaptic mechanisms underlying sensory behavior and drug dependence;
- Sensory regulation of aging and longevity.
In his sensory biology lab, they primarily use the genetic model organism C. elegans, as well as mouse models.
We look forward to you joining us in person (SAC 20) or through Zoom!
