History Presentation: Legalizing drugs, state power, & markets

Join us for “Legalizing Drugs: State Power and the Creation of Mind-Altering Markets,” the 2016 Roots of Contemporary Issues (RCI) George & Bernadine Converse Lecture. Feb. 2, CUB Senior Ball room at 7 p.m.

Drawing from her recent book, “We Sell Drugs: The Alchemy of US Empire,” Suzanna Reiss, assoc. prof., history, University of Hawaii, addresses the political economy of U.S. expansion, the history of capitalism, Cold War and anti-colonial politics, and how designations of legality and criminality have grounded the power of the modern state. Her presentation is placed within a larger international history of the establishment of a global drug control – and dissemination – regime.
