Hillside Café plans Ramadan event, Halal Chicken added to Dining Services’ repertoire

WSU Dining Services and the Muslim Student Association (MSA) are collaborating to offer kababs and skewers at Hillside Café on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 5–10 p.m. The idea for the event grew out of ongoing conversations with student leaders about how campus dining can better support students who observe Ramadan.

Until March 19, Hillside’s Natural station will feature halal-only chicken options and no pork products. Halal refers in part to how meat is prepared, cooked, and stored to avoid cross-contamination with non-Halal items, such as alcohol.

Beyond the Ramadan period, students eating at WSU Dining facilities can enjoy more Halal certified meats throughout the academic year including boneless chicken thighs and breasts in exclusive offerings for soups, naturals, and on the salad bar. Many entrees also feature these products.

Dining services began offering halal pepperoni on its pizzas last year, and adding Halal chicken is a natural progression, along with increasing allergen-free, vegan and vegetarian food, in helping all students feel welcomed and able to utilize Dining Services facilities.
