Environmental Issues Presentation: Fire and forest management

“Burning Issues: The past, present, and future of fire and forest management in the North American West,” presented by Mark Swanson, associate professor in the School of the Environment, on Tue., Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., CUB Senior Ballroom (rm 220).

The 2014 & 2015 fires seasons impacted lives, property, and ecosystem values in Washington state and beyond, and are part of trend toward larger and more severe forest fires in the North American West. The genesis of this situation is not just climate change but centuries of transformed landscapes and human societies.  An expert in the field, Swanson will explain how we can better understand the massive fires facing our region in historical and global perspective.  Sponsored by the Roots of Contemporary Issues (RCI) Program, Dept. of History.
