Four free interactive web-based modules designed to teach evidence-based approaches to pain management and substance use are now live and can be added to assignments. The asynchronous modules are designed to suit a variety of health science students.
Since their creation in 2025, more than 140 students have completed one or more of the RELIEF Health Science Student Modules. Students overwhelmingly gave high marks to the quality of the modules. They particularly valued learning about non-stigmatizing, person-centered care using videos that model clinical conversations with a patient scenario that evolves over time.
The modules were developed by an interprofessional team of WSU Health Sciences faculty, supported by a grant from the Washington State Health Care Authority, with the goal to improve population health and reduce substance use harms by fostering a well-prepared health care workforce. Students will gain knowledge and skills in managing complex patient scenarios through the following topics:
Module 1: Introduction to Pain Management Best Practices
Module 2: Assessment and Treatment of Pain
Module 3: Risk Assessment and Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder
Module 4: Navigating Complex Pain Management Scenarios
Each module takes approximately one hour to complete. For questions, contact the project team at nursing.painrelief@wsu.edu.
