Don’t Reply to Text Messages Asking for Confidential Account/Card Information

Dear WSECU Members:

Recently, WSECU members as well as non-members have received fraudulent text messages purporting to be from the credit union stating that the consumer’s card has been deactivated. The text prompts the receiver to call a phone number to reactivate their debit or credit card.  This is a type of fraud called smishing.  The cell phone numbers are randomly generated from a robo call system and have nothing to do with WSECU. Because the fraudsters have been successful, WSECU believes it’s likely that they will try it again, if not this weekend, then soon. They want everyone to be on alert for these false text messages and most importantly, do not reply!  Here is additional information about the scam.
