Dave Gibney is retiring from WSU effective Sept. 3, 2024, after 43 years of service. Dave came to WSU as a freshman in 1976, working toward a computer science major. In 1980, he was hired by the Washington State Department of Transportation as part of a WSU Computer Science internship program, working in Olympia, WA. There, building on recent courses, he learned Cobol programming.
In 1981, WSU Administrative Computing Services hired Dave Gibney as a paid time slip. Moving to a full-time civil service position as a Systems Analyst/Programmer II, he worked on the HEPPs (Higher Education Personal Payroll System) project.
Dave graduated from WSU in 1985 with a general studies degree, with help from the employee fee-waver program. He worked in several areas of what is now WSU ITS (Information Technology Services), eventually becoming the senior mainframe systems programmer from 2002 until 2022. He reports that “there were programs I wrote and worked on that were still running until Workday came along and shut those programs down.”
To celebrate Dave’s long and impactful career at WSU, please join us for a retirement reception on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 1:30–2:30 p.m. on the WSU Martin Stadium Mezzanine, Wilson Mall.
