Common Reading plans experiential opportunities

In its second year using “Braiding Sweetgrass,” the Common Reading Program is emphasizing experiential opportunities for students to engage with topics related to the book, in addition to a line-up of outstanding speakers. In partnership with many units, more than thirty programs are already in place for this fall — including films, performances, demonstrations, and exhibits. The series also includes many virtual talks accessible across the system. For the full fall calendar see wsu.presence.io/organization/common-reading-program.

The program also offers aids and resources for using the book and associated events. A weekly email with a PowerPoint slide advertises upcoming events and can be easily uploaded into Canvas or digital signage. A student success tip appropriate to that point in the semester is also included. To assist instructors, student attendance is logged at all events, allowing students to easily provide verification of their attendance. Finally, an extensive WSU Teaching Guide for the book is available on the program website, including ways to use the book to address WSU Undergraduate Learning Goals as well as links to an array of local resources. See the program website for the guide and more at CommonReading.wsu.edu.

Contact Karen Weathermon at kweathermon@wsu.edu if you would like to be added to list to receive the weekly PowerPoint update, or if you have questions or program suggestions.
