Colloquium: Physics & Astronomy – Colin J McKinstrie, March 10

The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites you to a colloquium featuring Colin J. McKinstrie, Applied Communication Sciences. Dr. McKinstrie will present his talk, “Optical parametric devices: Physics and applications”, Thursday, March 10, at 4:10 p.m. in Webster B17.

Meet for refreshments before the lecture at 3:45 – 4:10 p.m. in the foyer on floor G above the lecture hall.

Abstract:  In this talk I will review the physics and performance characteristics of parametric devices, such as amplifiers, frequency convertors and phase conjugators, which are based on four-wave mixing in fibers. I will also describe some recent applications of these devices, such as tunable radiation generation, phase-sensitive amplification, and buffering by frequency conversion and dispersion. My current research concerns the noise properties and information efficiencies of parametric systems, and photon generation and frequency conversion in quantum information experiments.
