The Critical Literacies Achievement and Success Program (CLASP) will host a summit meeting on May 1st on the Pullman campus to introduce key stakeholders to the unique student-retention and degree-completion strategies practiced by current CLASP participants.
In its fifth year at WSU, the program emphasizes individual faculty contact among first-generation, low-income, racially diverse, or otherwise underrepresented first-year students. With the support of key administrators and advocates, the program invites students and teachers into critical and reflective weekly dialogue, providing a means for teacher development and student agency. The program also provides faculty with guided opportunities to critically reflect on their pedagogy.
The summit meeting will explore ways in which WSU can structurally support the academic persistence and retention of underrepresented students and discuss the possibilities of expanding the program campus-wide to include other courses that serve a high number of first-year students.
