Worldwide, soil degradation is a quiet crisis that threatens the sustainable intensification of agriculture. Soil degradation is symptomatic of the failure of agriculture’s adaptive capacity and can lead to unintended transformational consequences. What are farmers in the Pacific Northwest doing to achieve sustainable agro-ecosystems? How can/are universities playing a supporting role in this respect?
Dr. J.D. Wulfhorst is a Professor at the University of Idaho in rural sociology and the environment.
Dr. David Huggins is Senior Scientist at the USDA-ARS and Adjunct Professor WSU Pullman, whose research focuses on soil science and agricultural systems.
