WSU is proud to host a two-day workshop Designing Senior-level Culminating Assignments that Help Students Integrate their Learning with Dr. Patricia Hutchings, May 25-26 on the Pullman campus. Dr. Hutchings is a national leader in teaching and course design, and currently a senior scholar with the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA). Hutchings was previously senior scholar and vice president at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where she worked extensively with the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
The workshop is especially intended for faculty who have taught a capstone course — or similar culminating experience course for seniors to integrate learning — and are interested in refining the assignment.
A $500 stipend is available to support instructors participating in the workshops and revising their assignment over the summer, as well as matching travel costs for faculty from other campuses.
Description: This two-part interactive workshop aims to open up a productive space for faculty discussion about teaching and learning. Participants will share a capstone assignment with peers in conversations intended to help guide assignment revision as a summer follow-up activity. We will focus on one of the most important challenges in undergraduate education today: providing students with opportunities to connect and integrate the various elements of their learning. This means making connections across courses, between general education and the major, and between academic coursework and work, citizenship, and personal life.
