The human microbiome includes multiple non-pathogenic parasites that reside in the gut and brain. Little is known about these parasites, but initial studies have shown that they can protect from infection with harmful parasites and affect how the body processes food. Dr. Knoll’s research focuses on parasites of the human microbiome as well as Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium, and Cryptosporidium.

Dr. Knoll is the recipient of many research awards. More information about her is available on her website; https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Laura_Knoll
