WSU Today the university’s newspaper for faculty, staff and graduate students will cease to be offered in print format, according to a decision announced on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
President Elson S. Floyd notified administrators that in the future all “internal” communications at WSU will be delivered electronically. The new policy is part of an effort to reduce costs and save resources.
As a result, WSU Today will provide internal news and information primarily via its website and other electronic formats.
The decision is part of the efforts currently being considered by the administration and the University Budget Committee. Printing and paper costs for WSU Today were $20,531 for the 2007-2008 academic year.
The printed version of the newspaper will continue through early or late February, to allow WSU Today staff to better prepare for the transition. As part of that process, an online survey will be launched within the next week, asking faculty, staff and graduate students to provide insights as to how the WSU Today website can be improved and designed to better meet their needs.
The faculty/staff publication began 38 years ago, in September 1971, as an 8X11 weekly newsletter titled the University Bulletin. Three years later it was renamed the Bulletin Calendar and was enlarged to an 11X17 format. In 1989, it was redesigned and renamed WSU Week. Finally, in 2001, it was redesigned and converted into its current 8-page biweekly format titled WSU Today, and linked to its related website that is updated daily, and provides a searchable online function.
