Kemble Stout Dedication Concert Features WSU Chamber Musicians

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University faculty members from the School of Music and Theatre Arts will perform a Sept. 16 concert of chamber music in memory of the late Kemble Stout.

The 8 p.m. concert will be in Bryan Hall Theatre and is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the theatre lobby. Members of the Stout family will attend the event.

Stout moved with his family in 1945 to Pullman, where he taught in the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts for 34 years and was department chair for 16 of those years.

He developed a summer graduate curriculum and welcomed music professionals to Pullman each June to study and play music together. Stout wrote some 50 music compositions and arrangements, many of which have been performed publicly.

He stayed busy as a piano tuner and technician and worked with architects to design the original Kimbrough music building. The music listening library in Kimbrough is named after him.

Stout shared his collection of piano rolls with listeners across the country by narrating and recording 242 half-hour programs for a series he titled “The Legendary Pianists.”

He died peacefully at home July 3.
