The Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture will unveil the new centerpiece of its presence on the Pullman campus later this week.
Schweitzer Engineering Hall’s official opening is being celebrated Friday, Sept. 18. An open house is planned for 3 p.m., with the ribbon cutting ceremony slated for 4:30 p.m.
The central pillar of Voiland’s ongoing development includes project-based and multipurpose classrooms, as well as club and showcase areas, and collaborative workspaces. It also features a suite of spaces dedicated to student support, including tutoring, advising, and career placement services.
The $80 million project was made possible thanks to a combination of strong donor and state support. Approximately half of the project’s cost was funded by the Washington State Legislature, with an initial $20 million in support from Edmund and Beatriz Schweitzer and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories employees anchoring the project’s launch. It was bolstered by a cross-section of nearly 100 more private donors.
Voiland faculty, staff, and students have eagerly awaited the formal unveiling of Schweitzer Engineering Hall. Earlier this year, the School of Design and Construction hosted a gallery exhibition to document the building’s progression.
The project is a testament to the collaborative spirit among members of the WSU community. Its design and construction were made possible through work undertaken by WSU staff, industry experts, and numerous Cougar alumni.
Schweitzer Engineering Hall will also be a hub for connecting students with potential employers with a $5 million investment from The Boeing Company. The Boeing Commons encompass the ground floor of Schweitzer Engineering Hall, serving as a vibrant space for collaboration, experiential learning, industry engagement, and community building for all VCEA students.
