A Washington State University scientist who pioneered the use of a 3D printer to create bone-like structures to repair bones and teeth will give the 2018 Distinguished Faculty Address.

Professor Susmita Bose of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering will present “3D Printing in Bone Health,” Wednesday, March 28, at 3:45 p.m. at the Goertzen Hall Auditorium on the Pullman campus.

A reception will follow. Please register to attend at https://showcase.wsu.edu/distinguished-faculty-address/.

Bose gained international attention for customizing a commercial 3D printer and discovering a way to strengthen the bone-like replicas that the machine “prints.”

The years-long work done by Bose and her research team means that doctors may one day be able to obtain replacement bone parts or tissue within hours of custom ordering them.

She was nominated to give the address as part of WSU’s annual Showcase celebration, which honors the achievements of WSU faculty, staff and students. The Distinguished Faculty Address award recognizes a faculty member for remarkable accomplishments in research, scholarship and teaching.

“Susmita Bose’s research contributions have made her a leader in the use of technology to improve health,” said Mary Rezac, dean of WSU’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture. “A brilliant scientist and an inspirational mentor, she is simultaneously improving the future of health care and the Voiland College.”

Bose, who came to WSU in 1998, is a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors as well as the Materials Research Society. In 2002, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers – the highest honor bestowed by the White House for work done by researchers early in their professions.

Bose is the Herman and Brita Lindholm Endowed Chair at WSU’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. She is also an accomplished singer of Indian classical music and plays the harmonium. For more information on her achievements, go to:  https://mme.wsu.edu/faculty/susmita-bose/.

WSU’s 2018 Showcase celebration runs March 27-April 2 and includes multiple events, including the President’s State of the University Address. For more information on the activities and awards, go to: https://showcase.wsu.edu/.
