BrianPloeger-80PULLMAN, Wash. – A visiting drummer and WSU trumpeter will perform with the WSU Jazz Big Band during a free, public concert at noon Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Bryan Hall at Washington State University. The concert is part of the daylong WSU Jazz Festival for area high school groups.

WSU receives top awards at Lionel Hampton Festival

PULLMAN — Students from the WSU Jazz Studies Program received top awards at “College Day” at the 2009 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival held Thursday, Feb. 26, at the University of Idaho.

 

Receiving “Adjudicators’ Choice” awards—presented to the best ensembles in their divisions—were the WSU Jazz Big Band directed by Greg Yasinitsky, Regents Professor, and WSU VOJAZZ (vocal ensemble) directed by Kathleen Hollingsworth, in her first year as a School of Music faculty member. WSU receives top honors at Hampton Festival

On College Day at the 2007 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival last week, five different WSU jazz soloists and ensembles took top honors in their division.”I am gratified that WSU was recognized for excellence across the musical spectrum, from ensembles to individuals, from instrumental soloists to vocal soloists and from performance to composition,” said Greg Yazinitsky, Meyer Distinguished Professor and coordinator of WSU’s jazz studies program. “I am extremely proud of our students and faculty.” The WSU Jazz Big Band, under Yazinitsky’s direction, earned first place in the College Guest Band division and received the Adjudicator’s Special Commendation award.
