PULLMAN – Thanks to a $1 million grant from the National Swimming Pool Foundation, WSU researchers plan to create the National Aquatics and Sports Medicine Institute.

“This will be the world’s premiere center for aquatic health research,” says the institute director, Dr. Bruce Becker, a physician and research professor in WSU’s College of Education. “There is no other lab with this mission and focus. Seminar features early Renaissance architecture

Matthew Cohen, an assistant professor of architecture in the Interdisciplinary Design Institute at WSU Spokane, will be the featured speaker at a free public seminar on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. in the Phase I Classroom Building Auditorium at 668 North Riverpoint Boulevard on the Riverpoint Campus. The presentation is a feature of the Third Friday Seminar Series hosted by the Office of Research and the Health Research and Education Center at WSU Spokane.Cohen’s research presentation– sometimes referred to as nonfiction DaVinci Code– will encompass his 15-year study of the proportional systems used in the churches designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in Florence. WSU Extension Full Immersion Spanish institute honored

WSU Extension’s Full Immersion Spanish Institute has received a Recognition of Excellence Award for Innovations in Outreach and Engagement from the University Continuing Education Association.The program was developed by Randy de Mars, coordinator of the WSU North Central Washington Learning Center in Wenatchee. In a continued university effort to assess instruction in order to offer the best undergraduate education, WSU’s Intercollegiate College of Nursing (ICN) plans to research the effectiveness of its Native American Summer Nursing Institute.The institute, which has been in operation since 1995, is intended to recruit Native American students into college and nursing.“Early evaluations have shown that, after attending the camp, more students saw nursing as a career with autonomy, power, financial rewards and a chance to contribute to their tribes,” said Janet Katz, assistant professor at ICN. “But we want more data on whether this type of recruitment program works.”A $19,203 grant from Group … » More …

Native American nursing institute attracts 24 students

SPOKANE — Twenty-two high school students from 14 Native American Western tribes will learn about nursing and Native American health care issues June 25 through July 1 during the 10th annual Na-ha-shnee Native American Summer Nursing Institute, sponsored by the Washington State University Intercollegiate College of Nursing.The weeklong institute coursework addresses the history, culture and health care needs of Native Americans and begins to create an awareness of the need for native nurses now and in the future. $3 million gift establishes Entrepreneurship Institute

PULLMAN — With the purpose of assisting students who are interested in entrepreneurship and to give them the tools and experiences needed to pursue their entrepreneurial goals, Harold and Diana Frank have donated $3 million for the establishment of the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute in the College of Engineering and Architecture. The institute will sponsor programs designed to empower student innovators to take their ideas to the marketplace, providing support for mentors and resources to help the students create innovative products within multidisciplinary teams. For a second year, the Women’s Resource Center at Washington State University will welcome students June 4 – 8 to the 2003 National Education for Women’s Leadership Inland Northwest Summer Institute, a program dedicated to women and public leadership. NEW Leadership focuses on women’s leadership education to empower them to become leaders who can make a difference. WSU Pullman is the host site for the Inland Northwest region.
