NWPR’s fundraiser proves record breaking

After months of planning for a one-day Northwest Public Radio fund drive, Mary Hawkins awoke with serious doubts about pulling it off. Campus phone lines had been down the day before and an icy blizzard had blown through eastern Washington during the night.

 

With drifting snow and closed highways, Hawkins, liaison between Educational Public Media and the School of Communication, was worried volunteers might not make it to WSU to help answer phones. But they did. And the results were a record 2,456 callers and $266,720 pledged.

Employees honored for CFD participation

Doris Lohrey-Birch has worked with the Combined Fund Drive for 16 years.

“It’s an easy way to contribute to things that are important to you,” said Lohrey-Birch, a senior secretary with the entomology department.

The CFD is Washington’s authorized and supported workplace giving program for state employees. For more than 20 years, employees have been donating to more than 2,000 local, national and international charities of their choice via the CFD.

“The needs are great, and even if a person is only able to contribute about $3 or $4 a month, that $3 or $4 can make a difference,” Lohrey-Birch said.

Cougar Health Awareness Team plans blood drives

PULLMAN–The Cougar Health Awareness Team will host American Red Cross Blood Drives on the Washington State University Pullman campus Nov. 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in The Bookie and Nov. 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the second floor atrium of the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education.In the United States, a blood transfusion is needed about every two seconds. WSU hopes to increase fund drive participation

Giving a little can go a long way, especially when combined with the gifts of many others.Through the Washington State Employees Combined Fund Drive (CFD), WSU faculty and staff have been giving for more than 20 years, and their generosity continues to grow. Last year, 9.8 percent of WSU employees pledged $169,894, a three percent increase in giving compared to 2004 and the largest pledge ever.Despite the openhanded efforts of many WSU employees, there is always room for growth. Fifth annual women’s clothing drive

For the fifth consecutive year, the Cougar volleyball team is sponsoring a clothing drive for disadvantaged women in the area. Fans are asked to bring their gently used clothing and a pair of new hose for donation to the Pullman Community Action Center. The clothing will be donated for use by area low-income women entering or re-entering the work force and needing professional clothing. Larger sizes are especially needed. Campuswide blood drive slated for Oct. 22-23

The Inland Northwest Blood Center is holding a Blood Drive for the WSU campus that will run 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 22 – 23 in the CUB Ballroom. This drive is a biannual event that is sponsored by the Rho Nu Prenursing Club, the American Pharmacists’ Association group on campus, the WSU Health and Wellness Center, the Air Force ROTC and the Farmhouse fraternity.
