PULLMAN, Wash. – Malcolm Brooks, author of the region’s 2016 Everybody Reads book selection, “Painted Horses,” will give a reading and lecture at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in Washington State University’s Terrell Library Quiet Study Lounge.
His debut novel is set in 1956 Montana where Catherine Lemay, a young archaeologist assigned to survey a canyon before dam construction, meets John H, a former mustanger and veteran of the U.S. Army’s last mounted cavalry campaign. “Painted Horses” is “a tale of the modern and the ancient, of love and fate, and of heritage threatened by progress,” according to the book description.
Brooks lives in Missoula, Mont. He was raised in the rural foothills of the California Sierras, growing up around Gold Rush and Native American artifacts. A carpenter by trade, he has lived in Montana for most of two decades. His writing has appeared in Gray’s Sporting Journal, Outside, Sports Afield and Montana Quarterly, among others.
