The Washington State University Energy Program is hosting a five-part Anaerobic Digester Webinar Series this summer and fall designed to support the development and operation of dairy farm anaerobic digesters in Washington state and beyond.
The series begins July 7 with an exploration of the role anaerobic digesters play in greenhouse gas emissions reduction and the influence of carbon credit markets on project economics. The focus shifts to utility interconnections, power markets, and their impact on digester design and operation later this month.
“When researchers have looked at where dairy farms can contribute the most emissions reduction per dollar invested in the near term, dairy digesters keep rising to the top,” said Georgine Yorgey, director of the WSU Energy Program. “This series is about making sure Washington’s producers and developers have access to people who can share accurate and up-to-date information about what works, what doesn’t, and where the opportunities are.”

Additional sessions will cover permitting and nutrient management, emerging technologies that improve digester performance and efficiency, and a concluding discussion examining the broader role of dairy anaerobic digesters in Washington’s agricultural and energy landscape.
Throughout the series, participants will hear from utilities, digester developers, state agencies, researchers, and dairy producers, providing a balanced perspective on current opportunities, challenges, and future developments in the industry.

The Dairy Digester Technical Assistance Program is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), via the Washington Department of Commerce. The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work, reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Information about the CCA is available at climate.wa.gov. The technical assistance program is complemented by over $13.8 million in Dairy Digester awards, administered by the Washington State Department of Commerce, that will support seven anaerobic digester projects across five counties, supporting energy generation, clean air, and economic development.
