The university will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. We encourage everyone to pause, remember, and honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

The staff at WSU Insider hopes you’re making the most of your Memorial Day holiday.

Fresh posting will resume Tuesday.

If you’re looking for thoughtful reading this holiday weekend, consider this 2017 article exploring the WWII service of the Washington’s 161st Infantry Regiment. A research project by WSU students about the the 161st, a unit that can trace its roots to Washington’s pre-statehood days as a territorial militia, represents the most thorough examination of its World War II service ever compiled.

The regiment’s success in the Pacific Theater would come to be seen as a global message about the combat readiness of America’s citizen volunteers. The regiment’s Company E was based in Pullman and numerous members of the WSU community were pulled into combat service when the unit was activated.

The research project also includes a video documentary featuring rare battlefield images and an accompanying podcast.
