Sheikh Nijam Ali, a recent graduate of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received the 2018‑19 Pre‑doctoral Achievement Award from the IEEE Solid‑State Circuits Society.

As part of the award, he is invited to attend the 2019 IEEE International Solid‑State Circuits Conference in San Francisco and will receive a cash award.

Ali received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science in December. As a graduate student, he received several awards, including the school’s 2018 best graduate researcher award, an award from IEEE’s Microwave Theory and Technique Society, and a graduate fellowship award.

During his time at WSU, he also worked as an intern in advanced radio frequency circuit design for Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories and at Skyworks Solutions Inc., where he was involved in energy‑efficient wideband integrated circuit development for 4G LTE cellular communications.

He has authored or coauthored more than 20 IEEE publications, holds a U.S. patent with Mitsubishi, and serves as a reviewer of several professional journals.

Since graduation, he has joined Skyworks Solutions Inc., in San Jose, California, as a senior radio frequency integrated circuit design engineer in the Mobile Solutions division. His major research focus is on radio frequency/millimeter‑wave integrated circuits and systems for 5G mobile communications and efficient wireless charging systems.

Originally from Bangladesh, Ali holds a bachelor’s degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, as well as a master’s degree from the University of British Columbia, Canada.
