PULLMAN – Graduate student Daniel Snook, who studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009, was among the winners of the recent photo contest sponsored by the Education Abroad Office.

The winning photographs will be on display through May on the bottom floor of Bryan Hall and Jan.25-Feb. 5 in the Holland/Terrell Library display case. To view a SoundSlide and all entries, go to https://www.ip.wsu.edu/education_abroad/photos-abroad-2009.shtml.

More than 50 entries were submitted to the third annual competition by students who studied abroad during the 2008-2009 academic year.

“The photo contest provides returned participants a great opportunity reflect on the impact of their experience, and an opportunity to share it visually with the WSU community,” said Miranda Roberts, Education Abroad adviser.

“Study abroad was an amazing experience that expanded my horizons,” said student Nicole Norwood, who studied abroad in China. “The photo contest was a great opportunity to reflect on my experience in China and also to see a glimpse of the life changing-experiences of other students.”

The winners of each of the four categories were:
1. Exploring Natural and Urban Landscapes: “Patagonia” by Kevin Gowan, a senior who studied in Valparaiso, Chile.
2. Discovering Local Culture: “Riding the Energy” by Daniel Snook.
3. Cougar Pride Abroad: “Look Out Below!” by Philip Denman, a senior who studied in Auckland, New Zealand.
4. International Friendships: “Friendship Solid as a Rock” by Krista Meyer, a junior who studied in Goldcoast, Australia.

This year’s winners were chosen by three judges based on craft and technical ability, content, style and originality. Judges were: Zachary Mazur, assistant curator of the WSU Museum of Art, professional photographer and instructor of digital photography at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash.; Karri Dieken, fine arts assistant professor and a master of fine arts candidate; and Alan Abdulkader, professional photographer working on his master’s degree in architecture from WSU.
