“He picked up the sport unusually fast,” said Mitch Williams, crew team captain. “He has become a key member of our lightweight program.”
After his diagnosis, Jones underwent 12 weeks of chemotherapy and three major surgeries. He beat the odds and was in remission until May, when the cancer returned.
He spent much of the summer at Seattle Children’s Hospital and is undergoing three more rounds of chemo the final one due in a couple of weeks.
“Jaimeson hasn’t let cancer bring him down, though,” Williams said. His family got him a stationary bike stand so he could work out in his hospital room, and he goes for runs when he’s recovering from chemo.
The team’s goal for the Row-A-Thon is to row 4.5 million meters on rowing machines in a 24-hour span. In addition to on-site donations, members send out letters to family and friends to get pledges; these funds go to support the sport.
