PULLMAN Health and Wellness Services (HWS) will offer seasonal flu vaccine to the campus community in a series of outreaches beginning Oct. 10 in the Compton Union Building (CUB).
According to the Centers for Disease Control, we should expect to see illness this year from seasonal flu as well as H1N1. The flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu virus, and HWS is encouraging the campus community, especially those who are at high risk for experiencing complication from the flu, to get vaccinated for seasonal flu as early as possible.
“We do seasonal flu vaccine outreaches every year in collaboration with the College of Pharmacy, but the vaccine is typically available later in the year. We’re trying to get as many people as possible protected against seasonal flu vaccine early so that we can be ready to begin H1N1 outreaches when that vaccine becomes available,” said Marsha Turnbull, Health & Wellness Services Health Education Administrator.
Seasonal flu vaccine outreaches are scheduled 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 13 to Oct. 16 at the CUB across from The Bookie.
The cost of the vaccine is $25. Payment will be accepted in cash or checks made out to HWS. For students, HWS can bill most major health insurance plans or charge the cost of the vaccine to their WSU account.
“One thing to know is that the type of vaccine we have available is not appropriate for anyone under the age of 18 or pregnant women,” Turnbull said. Click here for more information about seasonal flu vaccine and recommendations for who should get vaccinated.
