PULLMAN Environmental stewardship and sustainability will be the topic of a talk by Bert Gregory, an expert in resource-efficient design, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in Fine Arts 5062.
Buildings account for 48 percent of the energy and 78 percent of the electrical energy used in the United States. Gregory, president and CEO of Mithun Inc., will discuss how some of his firm’s projects address environmentally sensitive issues through building design and urban planning.
Some of the company’s best-known projects include REI’s flagship store in Seattle; IslandWood, a rural campus for environmental learning on Bainbridge Island; the Salish Lodge and Spa at Snoqualmie Falls; and High Point, a west-Seattle housing development designed for sustainability and affordability.
Mithun has begun work on a sustainably designed international school for children in Mumbai, India. The company has offices in Seattle and San Francisco.
Gregory has led Mithun to national recognition for concept-based, environmentally intelligent design. The firm has won a number of honors, including the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2003 Sustainable Design Leadership Award; four Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top-10 Green Projects; two American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) National Awards; and an AIA National Honor Award for Urban Design.
Mithun also received awards for sustainable design from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and CoreNet Global. In 2004, the company earned the United States Green Building Council’s local and regional Leadership Award.
A fellow of the American Institute of Architects, Gregory is a national leader, speaker and advocate for sustainable building and urbanism. He serves on the United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design® Neighborhood Development Core Committee and the Washington Governor’s Clean Technology Leadership Council. He is a member of the Clinton Climate Initiative’s Climate Positive Communities Technical Resource Group.
The lecture is sponsored by the School of Architecture and Construction Management.
