Provost announces 2009-10 Faculty Awards Program

PULLMAN – The provost is seeking nominations by Oct. 9 for the 2009-10 Faculty Awards Program.
“Our university’s theme, ’World Class.  Face to Face,’ clearly reflects our superb faculty and their exemplary efforts,” wrote Provost Warwick Bayly in a recent memo. “The awards are designed to honor those faculty members who epitomize the highest levels of excellence in the pursuit of the university’s mission and goals.”
He encouraged faculty, staff and students to nominate faculty members in any of four award categories:
* The Eminent Faculty Award is WSU’s highest faculty honor and comes with $15,000. Nominees must be full-time faculty members and must have served the university a minimum of 10 years.
* The Sahlin Faculty Excellence Awards in instruction, leadership, outreach and engagement, and scholarship and arts are open to any regularly appointed tenured or nontenured faculty member. Nominees must be employed at least half-time by the university. The award is named after Lee and Jody Sahlin, who contribute $3,000 per award each year.
* The Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award recognizes unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching during the academic year. All tenured or tenure-track faculty are eligible. The award includes $5,000.
* The Distinguished Faculty Address Award goes to a faculty member whose achievements in research, scholarship and teaching place him/her in the front ranks of his/her subject area. There is no monetary prize, but the winner will give an address to the university community during spring semester.
Nominators must submit a nomination form, a copy of the nominee’s vita and a narrative stating why the nominee is deserving of the award. All nominations are due by Oct. 9 in the Office of the Provost (campus mail 1046 or French Ad 436).
The awards will be presented at the Celebrating Excellence banquet in spring 2010, part of the annual “World Class. Face to Face” Showcase events.
