Invitation for annual campus Move-in Welcome

PULLMAN – The Division of Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity invites the university community to take part in “Move-in Welcome.”  Help make “World Class. Face to Face.” personally meaningful to incoming students and parents as they check into residence halls the week before classes.

Last year, during “Move-in Welcome,” students and parents were greeted by an energized mix of faculty, staff and administrators when they arrived on campus. Families were met at the curb and assisted in locating and moving into their newly assigned rooms.

“Students and parents were not only grateful, but pleasantly surprised – and sometimes amazed – that the entire university community would take the time to personally welcome and assist them,” wrote Michael Tate, Vice President for Student Affairs, Equity and Diversity, in an email to the campus community.

“This is a busy and important week for our community.  Volunteers last year, including the president, vice presidents, deans, administrators, faculty and staff, agree that “Move-in Welcome” is a remarkably rewarding Cougar experience,” he said.

Faculty and staff are invited to help for an hour, two hours, or even more, on one of the following days, which we anticipate will be the most active:

Sunday, August 16, 10-4pm, residence halls open for fall

Wednesday, August 19, 10-4pm, the recommended date of arrival for Alive! participants

With your help, our students’ first experience at Washington State University will truly be “face to face.”

To volunteer, please contact JoAnne Bryan by Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 335-3420 or email bryanj@wsu.edu with your preferred hour(s) and your t-shirt size.  JoAnne will schedule you at your convenience, and recommend a hall assignment.  If you have a hall preference, please tell JoAnne.

If, for some reason, you are unable or uncomfortable loading boxes and personal effects, there are many other tasks you can help with, like greeting, directing walk-in traffic, or driving a shuttle.  No matter your functional contribution, the important attributes you bring will be your smile and your warm welcome.
