Tri-Cities hosts kids summer science camps

Camp themes about rockets, physics, robots and ecosystems will offer fun learning experiences for kids at Summer Science Camp.

The day camps are held at WSU Tri-Cities for kids who will be entering kindergarten through fifth grade in fall 2009. Four camp themes are each offered twice throughout the summer. The weeklong sessions use hands-on activities and curriculum taught by certified teachers.

The 2009 Summer Science Camp schedule is:
• Fabulous Physics Challenge, June 22-26 and July 20-24. Build a dragster, throw magnetic darts, make slime sports shoes and hurtle parachutes. Learn how physics properties relate to sports. Experiment with magnetic attraction, friction, weight and air force resistance. Build balloon rockets, design catapults and learn how levers make work easier.
• Space and Rocketry, June 29-July 3 and July 27-31. Blast off from planet Earth by building and launching a rocket that can fly 70 mph and 300 feet high. Learn about the planets of our universe — uncover the geology with your electric Mars rover. Explore aerodynamics and air pressure while testing potato rockets. Build an anemometer for your rover and use it to investigate wind speeds at the launch site as you put your rocket knowledge to the test. Family members are invited to the “big event” rocket launches on July 3 and July 31.
• Powerful Planet, July 6-10 and Aug. 3-7. Become an eco-expert. Learn about alternative energies as you construct an electric car. Investigate the magnetic forces that turtles use to navigate the globe, build a model of the ocean, clean up oil spills, construct a turtle-friendly light box and create a slimy toy frog. Build wheelie racers and experiment with friction. Discover the power of electrons and learn how energy turns into motion. Create a solar oven to make s’mores, construct a water filtration system, design wind turbines and make your own paper.
• Gizmo’s Robot Factory, July 13-17 and Aug. 10-14. Design, build and battle your own walking K’Nex robot. Discover what makes robots work as you compete in the robo-olympics. Build a satellite. Investigate top-secret listening devices and craft a periscope. View color in 3-D “robot vision” and explore your own color creations at home. Full-day campers will build a robot tool kit and make their own motorized inventions.

Each camp is held at WSU Tri-Cities in the Consolidated Information Center, 2770 University Drive, Richland. Full-day programs are 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Half-day campers attend 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Paid registrations received before May 15 get the discounted rates of $149 for a half-day and $229 for a full-day camp. The cost for sign-ups after May 15 is $169 for half-day and $259 for full-day camp. Limited scholarships are available thanks to donations from Fluor and Key Bank.

Additional details, downloadable forms and online registration with a credit card are at www.tricity.wsu.edu/summersciencecamp.

Space is limited and most camps sell out. See the registration form for details on refunds and changes. For more information, contact summer science camp coordinator Jo Kostoff at 372-7606 or jkostoff@tricity.wsu.edu.
