Cover story features retention counselor

Bernadette Buchanan Mencke, lead retention counselor for WSU Student Support Services, is featured in the May issue of Student Affairs Today. The national publication showcases scholarly work in student services.
Buchanan Mencke is featured in the cover story, “Prepare to meet mental health needs of veterans on campus.” The article says many universities and colleges are not adequately addressing the special needs of war veterans and provides a checklist of ways to better support them. See the story at https://www.thedivision.wsu.edu/Content/Documents/saed/say12_02.pdf?PageID=3473.
Student Affairs Today editors contacted Buchanan Mencke prior to her March presentation on the subject at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrator’s Conference in Seattle.

“I started working on the project in the fall of 2008 when I noticed a few veterans in the TRiO programs were struggling a bit getting used to civilian life,” she said.
