For a third time, the College of Education is part of an initiative to improve education graduate programs nationwide.
The college was invited with seven others to identify the best ways to prepare the principals, superintendents and other educational leaders of tomorrow. The year-long project is sponsored by the University Council for Education Administration (UCEA) and the Wallace Foundation.
The earlier projects in which WSU participated include the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate, to study doctoral programs, and the ongoing Carnegie Professional Education Doctorate (Ed.D).
“We are gratified by the invitation to participate in these efforts because it shows our graduate programs are well-regarded,” said Judy Nichols Mitchell, dean of the WSU College of Education. “Such projects also provide us with a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with our colleagues at some of the finest institutions in the country.”

The UCEA is a consortium of major research universities with both doctoral and masters programs in educational leadership and policy. The goal of the UCEA-Wallace project is to identify successful strategies used in educational leadership programs and share that knowledge.
Besides Mitchell, WSU faculty involved in the UCEA-Wallace project are Joan Kingrey, coordinator of Educational Leadership, and Gene Sharratt, director of the Superintendent Certificate Program.
The other participating colleges are at the University of Colorado, University of Delaware, University of Kansas, Miami University of Ohio, University of Oklahoma, Penn State University and University of Southern California.
The Educational Leadership Program offers four degree programs: Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Ph.D.) Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), Master of Arts in Education (M.A.), and Master of Education (Ed.M). The program offers initial Washington state certification programs for school district superintendents, principals and program administrators. In 2009, the program also began offering professional certification for principals and program administrators.
