PULLMAN — WSU Professor of women’s studies Noël Sturgeon will sign copies of her new book “Environmentalism in Popular Culture: Gender, Race, Sexuality, and the Politics of Nature” (University of Arizona Press, 2009), from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Earth Day, April 22, at the Bookie in the CUB.
In her book, Sturgeon illustrates the ways in which American popular culture depicts social inequalities as “natural” and how perceived images of “nature” interfere with creating solutions to environmental problems that are just and fair to all.
According to the publisher, this thoughtful and highly readable book will provoke debates among college students, professors, environmental activists and citizens who are concerned with issues of environmental quality and social equality.
Sturgeon has lectured internationally and written extensively on environmentalist, antimilitarist and feminist movements and theories, and is the author of “Ecofeminist Natures: Race, Gender, Feminist Theory and Political Action” (Routledge 1997).
In addition to a Rockefeller Fellowship at the Center for the Critical Analysis of Contemporary Culture at Rutgers University, Sturgeon has served as a visiting scholar at the Center for Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Cruz; at the JFK Institute for North American Studies at the Frei Universitat in Berlin; and at the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy at Murdoch University in Australia.
At WSU, Sturgeon co-directed the Center for Social and Environmental Justice and the research group Gendering Research Across the Campuses (GRACe).
