WSU names 2009 Mom of the Year

PULLMAN — WSU presented the 2009 Mom of the Year Award to Martha Knight during the annual Mom’s Weekend Brunch on Saturday, April 4. Knight was nominated by her daughter, Aubrey Rehn, a senior at WSU.

A resident of Spokane, Knight was described by her daughter as a strong, intelligent and loving woman with a “desire to learn and better herself that has never stopped.”

“I hope I can be half the mother she is when my turn to raise children comes along,” Rehn wrote in her nomination form. “I want her to see herself through the eyes of a stranger for one day and recognize the truly amazing woman she is.”

Rehn praised her mom because Knight has fought cancer on three occasions with “no sign of fear or tears that could be found on her face in front of her children…she never let the amount of financial insecurity of our household ever show to us kids.”

The other two finalists for the Mom of the Year Award were Renee Handler Klein of Normandy Park, nominated by her daughter Kate Handler; and Karen Gangi of Redmond, nominated by her daughter Michelle Gangi.

The Mom of the Year Award is coordinated by the Mom’s Weekend Committee under the direction of the Women’s Resource Center. The award is presented each year to recognize the impact mothers make on their children’s lives, and to honor their personal achievements and their contributions to WSU and their local community.
