Clarinet music from turn of century

PULLMAN — Shannon Scott, instructor of clarinet and history of music and clarinetist for Solstice Woodwind Quintet at WSU School of Music, will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb 20 in Bryan Hall Theater as part of the Music Faculty Artist Series.

The evening’s works will be drawn from clarinet repertoire composed around the turn of the 20th century. The contrast in styles shows how each composer reacted to the influence of Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner. Debussy rejected Wagnerian chromaticism and density in favor of impressionist colors and textures. Englishman Hurlstone wrote bright and cheerful melodies, while American Charles Ives produced a lulling Largo with hints of his future unique voice. The works of Karg-Elert and Reger are firmly in the late Romantic tradition of chromatic harmonies and expressionist intensity.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens 60 and older and for non-WSU students and free for WSU Students with ID. Season Pass for all 9 performances: $60.

Tickets are available for purchase one hour before the performance in the lobby. All proceeds from the sales of tickets will benefit the School of Music scholarship fund. For more information call 509-335-3898.
