The concert will begin with German Baroque songs by Telemann, Bach and Handel, accented with cello continuo and violin and piano accompaniment. The recital will continue with a set of Robert Schumann Lieder and a Tchaikovsky aria from the opera “Jeanne d’Arc.” The second half of the program will feature music of contemporary American composers, including a delightful setting of four American folk songs by former WSU music professor William E. Brandt.
Grunewald is a longstanding WSU community member, who graduated in 1977 with a bachelor of music in vocal performance. As a student she was awarded several music scholarships and sang as the alto soloist in Brueckner’s “Te Deum,” and Handel’s “Messiah.” She also was the featured soloist in Mahler’s “Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” (“Songs of a Wayfarer”), presented by the WSU Symphony Orchestra.
After re-entering the performance sphere in 2004, Grunewald has given song recitals on the Palouse area, and in Seattle, Port Angeles, Port Townsend and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has performed regularly in WSU’s Library Atrium Concert Series, and as a soloist and chorister with the Washington-Idaho Concert Chorale.
