Pharmacy students help vaccinate

PULLMAN- WSU pharmacy students administered flu shots to residents at Bishop Place Tuesday afternoon. The students will continue to give flu shots to student athletes at Bohler Gym starting this week and into next.

Beginning Oct. 20 pharmacy students will join nurses from WSU Health and Wellness Services and give flu vaccines to all members of the WSU community at the Compton Union Building (CUB).

Flu vaccines cost $25 and are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 21-24. If students can’t make it to the CUB, they can stop by the clinic, located on the first floor of the Washington Building across from the Stephenson Complex on Stadium Way, any morning during clinic office hours to receive the vaccine.

Faculty and staff are asked to get their shots at the CUB during the week of Oct. 20.

Second-year pharmacy students must administer one flu shot to receive certification from the American Pharmacists Association, and 10 flu shots to be certified by the Washington State Pharmacy Association.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu vaccine is the best protection against flu viruses.  Flu season can begin as early as October and continue into the spring months. Flu outbreaks usually peak around January.

Living in close quarters makes it easier to catch the common cold or flu but by following preventive techniques, one can protect themselves and others around them. The CDC recommends three simple steps to reduce the chances of getting the flu: Taking the time to get the vaccine, following everyday preventive steps like frequent hand washing and covering your cough to prevent the spread of germs, and taking antiviral drugs if your doctor says to.

For students who do catch a cold or the flu, HWS offers urgent care services during regular office hours, Saturdays and most holidays, as well as a 24-hour nurse hotline. For more information about the flu or medical services, please visit
