Nursing Scholar to Speak about Nursing Education Reform

SPOKANE, Wash.- Nationally known scholar and nursing education expert, Christine Tanner, will be the featured speaker at the 2008 Thelma L. Cleveland Visiting Scholar event hosted by the Washington State University College of Nursing 5-6:30 p.m. Sept. 18, on the WSU Vancouver campus. Her discussion will focus on the 20-year reform movement in nursing education and the significant changes in clinical education on the horizon.

With more than 30 years of experience in academic nursing, Christine Tanner, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, is nationally recognized for her expertise in nursing education. She serves as senior editor for the Journal of Nursing Education and was the 2005 recipient of the National League for Nursing Award for Excellence in Nursing Education Research.
Tanner is the A.B. Youmans Spaulding Distinguished Professor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). She has been the principal or co-principal investigator on numerous research grants and project director on several training grants from both the federal government and local and national foundations. She was the primary investigator commissioned by the Northwest Health Foundation’s study of the nursing workforce, authoring the report “Oregon’s Nursing Shortage: A Public Health Crisis in the Making.”

Tanner’s “live” presentation will be held on the WSU Vancouver Campus in the Classroom Building, Rooms 130 and 131. Live videostream of Tanner’s presentation will be broadcast throughout the state at the following WSU College of Nursing locations: Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla and Pullman. Receptions will be held immediately after the presentation in both Vancouver and Spokane.

Now in its tenth year, the annual Cleveland Visiting Scholar event brings nursing scholars with a national perspective and expert knowledge to the WSU College of Nursing to discuss issues related to nursing and health-care education, practice and professional development. The program began in 1998 to honor Dean Emerita Thelma Cleveland. The event is sponsored by the WSU College of Nursing and is made possible through the gifts and financial contributions of a network of community and individual donors committed to quality health care and higher education. This presentation offers participants 1.5 contact hours provided by the WSU College of Nursing.
