Convocation welcomes freshmen class

WSU’s annual convocation ceremony, held Aug. 22,  provided an official welcome for university freshman and transfer students, as well as new faculty and parents.

In many ways this ceremony marks the beginning of the collegiate journey and ushers individuals into the community of scholars. Some elements of convocation resemble commencement (graduation) which marks the culmination of education at Washington State University.

Instead of a diploma, students receive a special entering year pin at convocation.

In academia, the word “convocation” refers to a ceremonial assembly of the members of a college or university. Traditionally, academic convocations celebrate special events such as the beginning of the academic year or the anniversary of an institution.
